How in-building wireless services work:

  • A donor antenna receives and transmits signal to and from radio tower repeaters
  • A signal booster/Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA) amplifies radio site transmissions (downlink) and amplifies portable radio transmissions (uplink)
  • A distribution system delivers the signal to in-building portable unit operators designed with coaxial cable, radio-frequency (RF) splitters and low-profile antennas.
  • Medium RF power source
  • Small footprint signal amplification device with air link to RF channels of tower site
  • Typical application is for internal signal level enhancement
  • Coaxial cable and low profile internal antennas connect to BDA to facilitate in-building enhancement
  • One BDA serves 300k to 1M+ sq. ft. (approx.) for Public Safety
  • Requires external antenna to link with radio transmission site (air interface)

How radio-frequency signal enhancement works:

  • RF infrastructure components deliver RF signals to system antennas or leaky cable.
  • Air interface with communications tower
  • External antenna focused at tower site
  • Signal booster / bi-directional amplifier (BDA)
  • Amplifies a select group of frequencies
  • Direct connection to repeater system
  • RF couplers extract small percentage (10%) of signal from RF transmission system

Fiber-Based In-Building System

  • Deployed to cover large areas (500k+ square feet)
  • System comprises optical & RF components configured to distribute RF signals throughout a facility (connects to RF source electronics)
